Terp Pearls FAQs
What are terp pearls, and what do they do?
Terp Pearls (or dab balls) are tiny balls of quartz, ruby, or ceramic that you drop inside your banger. Their main job is to maximize your flavor and vapor. When you inhale, the airflow forces the pearls to spin rapidly around the bottom of the banger, which physically pushes and spreads your concentrate across the hot quartz walls. This stops your wax from pooling in one cold spot, vaporizes your dab completely, and lets you take larger hits at lower temperatures.
Do I really need terp pearls?
Yes, they are highly recommended if you want the best performance from your setup. Terp Pearls significantly improve the overall performance of your banger, maximizing flavor and vapor production while providing a smoother, more consistent pull.
How many terp pearls should I put in my banger?
For almost every setup, one or two pearls is the sweet spot. Using a single pearl works great for smaller dabs or tighter chambers. Two pearls provide awesome heat retention and coverage for larger hits. Avoid overloading your banger with three or more pearls—they will just bump into each other, block the airflow, and get stuck instead of spinning.
What size terp pearls do I need?
It depends entirely on the style and size of your banger:
- Bucket Bangers & Auto Spinners: 5mm or 6mm pearls are the industry standard. They have the perfect weight to spin smoothly without splashing oil up the neck.
- Terp Slurpers & Towers: These usually use smaller 5mm or 6mm pearls inside the barrel, or you can swap them out for a long vertical pillar or valve marble instead.
- Mini Bangers: If you are rocking a micro or mini setup, stick to tiny 4mm pearls so they don’t choke out the chamber.
- Electronic Devices: 3mm-4mm are good for Puffcos and other electronic devices like Dr. Dabber.
What are the most common terp pearl sizes?
The most common terp pearl sizes include:
- 3mm & 4mm: Best for smaller setups, micro-dabs, and electronic devices (like Puffcos).
- 5mm & 6mm: The industry standard for most traditional bangers, terp slurpers, and auto-spinners.

Ruby vs. Quartz: Does terp pearl material matter?
The material you choose changes how quickly your accessories heat up, how long they hold that heat, and how durable they are. Here is a breakdown of the most common materials:
- Quartz: The reliable industry standard. Quartz offers great thermal shock resistance (it won’t crack from temperature drops) and provides a clean, neutral flavor. It heats up quickly but loses heat faster than other premium materials.
- Ruby & Sapphire (Synthetic Corundum): Known for superior heat retention compared to quartz, meaning it stays at optimal temperature longer. Ruby is sensitive to thermal shock and should never be torched directly or dunked while hot.
- Silicon Carbide (SiC): A high-performance ceramic with extreme thermal conductivity and unmatched heat retention. It is practically indestructible, incredibly thermal-shock resistant, and has a naturally slick surface that makes it easy to wipe clean.
- Cubic Zirconia (CZ): A dense material that offers excellent heat retention, sitting right in the sweet spot between quartz and ruby. It holds its temperature very well for long, low-temp sessions and provides a pristine flavor profile, but like ruby, it requires careful cooling before cleaning to avoid thermal shock.
How do I clean terp pearls?
After your dab, allow your accessories to cool slightly so they aren’t super hot. From there, you can either simply wipe them down or soak them right along with your banger:
- Wipe Method: You don’t need a full soak for a quick clean. You can simply place your accessories directly into a paper towel or clean cloth and wipe them clean. If there is any stubborn residue, you can lightly dampen your cloth with isopropyl alcohol before wiping.
- Dunk Method: Dunk your accessories in isopropyl alcohol to loosen residue, then wipe dry. To make this effortless, use our Banger Cleaning Bin—the built-in strainer basket lets you soak your pearls, pillars, and bangers all at once, then lift them out safely without fishing around in dirty alcohol.
Keeping your accessories pristine ensures they spin and move properly, maintains unrestricted airflow, and keeps your flavor pure.
How do I get my terp pearls to spin?
How you get your terp pearls to spin depends entirely on the style of banger you are using:
- Traditional Bangers: These require a dedicated spinner cap to direct the airflow and force the pearls into a spin.
- Terp Slurpers & Towers: These are designed with built-in airflow inlets. They will spin automatically once you seal the top of the barrel with a solid marble or cap.
- Auto-Spinner Bangers: Like Slurpers and Towers, these feature built-in intake holes on the sides of the bucket. To get them to spin, you just need to seal the top opening with a solid marble.
- Puffcos & E-Devices: How pearls spin in an electronic device depends on the model. Some are designed to spin pearls right out of the box (like the Puffco Pivot), while others require a specific cap to create the proper airflow (like the Puffco Peak).
Why aren’t my terp pearls spinning?
If your pearls aren’t spinning, the exact issue usually depends on your style of banger, but it typically boils down to a few common culprits:
- Wrong or Incorrect Sealing Cap: Airflow is everything. If you are using a standard cap instead of a spinner cap on a Traditional Banger, or if your marble doesn’t form a perfect, airtight seal on a Slurper, Tower, or Auto Spinner, the pearls won’t get enough velocity to move.
- Sticky Residue and Buildup: If the banger or the pearls haven’t been freshly cleaned, residual concentrates will act like glue. Even a tiny bit of sticky buildup will pin the pearls to the bottom or sides of the quartz.
- Incorrect Pearl Size: If a pearl is too large for the chamber, it won’t have the clearance to spin freely.
- Size of the Dab: Loading too large of a dab can drown the pearls in oil, creating too much surface tension and weight for the airflow to lift and spin.
- Temperature and Heat: If the banger is too cold, the concentrate will remain thick and viscous, trapping the pearls in place instead of letting them glide.
